From Lijiang, embark on a 60KM drive to the First Bend of the Yangtze River, where majestic gorge views unfold before you. Continue another 40KM to the Upper Tiger Leaping Gorge, the deepest gorge in the world. Known locally as Jinsha River for the gold found in its waters, it boasts 34 roaring rapids. Enjoy lunch at the Middle section of Tiger Leaping Gorge before heading to Haba Village, a tranquil Naxi settlement nestled at the foot of Haba Snow Mountain. Arrive at Haba Snow Mountain Guesthouse (2600m) to prepare your gear and acclimatize to the altitude. After lunch, monitor your heart rate and blood oxygen levels while learning about the mountain’s climbing conditions and safety tips. Spend the night here, readying yourself for the adventure ahead.
Begin your 15 km trek up Haba Snow Mountain to the Base Camp at around 4,200 meters, a journey of about 7 hours. Yaks will carry your luggage, so you only need to bring water, clothing, and essential snacks. The rest of your gear will be transported by the animals to the camp. The base camp sits at approximately 4,100 meters, though altitude estimates vary. This is a long, challenging day, with muddy trails—waterproof boots are a must. Most of the hike passes through beautiful Yunnan forests, interrupted by three alpine meadows along the way. You’ll gain about 1,500 meters in elevation today. Altitude sickness is common at this height, so be attentive to how you feel and communicate any discomfort to your guide. Remember, for safety, resting before 9:00 PM is not permitted. Overnight accommodations are either at the Base Camp or in cozy wooden huts equipped with beds and quilts.
