Ideal climbing seasons are mid-March to June and mid-September to mid-December for stable weather and clearer skies. Winter climbs are best between November–early December or late February–March.

Physical Fitness:
Prepare with cardio and strength training, focusing on endurance to handle long hours of trekking in tough conditions.

Gear and Clothing:
Dress in moisture-wicking layers with a waterproof jacket, thermal base layers, thick socks, and sturdy hiking boots. Bring snow goggles, gaiters, gloves, headlamps, trekking poles, and a 20L backpack with rain cover. Don’t forget sunscreen, lip balm, medications, and power banks.

Guided Tours and Safety:
Hire an experienced guide if unfamiliar with mountain climbing. Always prioritize safety—be ready to postpone if weather worsens.

Itinerary

From Lijiang, embark on a 60KM drive to the First Bend of the Yangtze River, where majestic gorge views unfold before you. Stop at Stone Drum Town, named after a massive marble tablet shaped like a drum, and admire the scenic Lijiang valley, dotted with golden wheat fields and drying haystacks. Continue another 40KM to the Upper Tiger Leaping Gorge, the deepest gorge in the world. Known locally as Jinsha River for the gold found in its waters, it boasts 34 roaring rapids. Enjoy lunch at the Middle section of Tiger Leaping Gorge before heading to Haba Village, a tranquil Naxi settlement nestled at the foot of Haba Snow Mountain. Arrive at Haba Snow Mountain Guesthouse (2600m) to prepare your gear and acclimatize to the altitude. After lunch, monitor your heart rate and blood oxygen levels while learning about the mountain’s climbing conditions and safety tips. Spend the night here, readying yourself for the adventure ahead.

Begin your 15 km trek up Haba Snow Mountain to the Base Camp at around 4,200 meters, a journey of about 7 hours. Yaks will carry your luggage, so you only need to bring water, clothing, and essential snacks. The rest of your gear will be transported by the animals to the camp. The base camp sits at approximately 4,100 meters, though altitude estimates vary. This is a long, challenging day, with muddy trails—waterproof boots are a must. Most of the hike passes through beautiful Yunnan forests, interrupted by three alpine meadows along the way. You’ll gain about 1,500 meters in elevation today. Altitude sickness is common at this height, so be attentive to how you feel and communicate any discomfort to your guide. Remember, for safety, resting before 9:00 PM is not permitted. Overnight accommodations are either at the Base Camp or in cozy wooden huts equipped with beds and quilts.

  • Wake up at 3:00 AM to prepare your gear and have a light breakfast. Before departure, check your health to ensure you are fit for the climb. At 4:00 AM, leave Camp 1, leaving most of your luggage behind and carrying only essential mountaineering equipment — rope, ice axe, crampons, backpack, solid food, a warm thermos of water, clothing, headlamp, and climbing gear — ready to summit Haba Snow Mountain.
  • You will climb about 4 kilometers along an ice and snow trail, gaining approximately 500 meters in altitude. The ascent to the summit at 5,396 meters typically takes around 5 hours, with about 3 hours from Camp 1 to the top. Once at the summit, enjoy breathtaking views of Haba Snow Mountain, Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, and the winding Yangtze River below. Take plenty of photos to capture this unforgettable moment.
  • After a picnic lunch on the summit, descend back to Camp 1 to collect your luggage, then continue down to the Base Camp at 4,200 meters. At Base Camp, your service team will prepare a delicious meal for you. Spend the night at Base Camp to rest and recover.

Trek down from Base Camp to Long Wang Bian Village, with yaks carrying your luggage. Along the way, visit the pristine Heihai Lake nestled within its original forest. After lunch, drive back to Lijiang where the service concludes. Best Time to Climb Haba Snow Mountain:The ideal climbing seasons are May, June, and from late September to early November.
